NIGERIA — A civilian-contracted aircraft crashed at a remote United States Air Force radar station in Alaska on Thursday, killing all eight people on board.
The Alaskan Command confirmed the fatal incident occurred at the airport serving the Cape Newenham long-range radar site, located on the southwestern tip of the state.
According to a military statement, search and rescue teams deployed to the remote location and confirmed there were no survivors from the crash.
The military authorities did not immediately disclose the specific activities the occupants were conducting at the facility, which is used to monitor flights within the airspace of Alaska.
A spokesperson for the command stated that an investigation into the accident is underway, adding that the identities of the deceased will be made public once their families are notified.
Lieutenant General Robert Davis, the commander of the Alaskan Command, described the incident as a devastating loss for both the military community and the public they serve.
He praised the victims as dedicated professionals who were executing an essential mission under highly demanding environmental conditions.
