ABEOKUTA, Nigeria — The National Association of Nigerian Students, Southwest Zone D, has condemned the killing of Miss Ahmed Sekinat, an HND II Marketing student of D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, Itori, Ogun State.

Sekinat lost her life during an overnight robbery attack around the student residential area at Eruku, Itori, Ewekoro, while examinations were ongoing. Another student was shot and several others sustained injuries.

NANS described the incident as heartbreaking and unacceptable. The association said students should not have to choose between pursuing their education and protecting their lives, especially during an examination period.

Students of the institution have begun peaceful protests. NANS Southwest representatives are on ground to ensure their grievances are properly represented and focused on the demand for justice and improved security.

The association called on the Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Ogun State Government and other security agencies to immediately identify and arrest those responsible for the attack.

It also demanded an urgent security assessment of student communities around the polytechnic and stronger patrols around student residential areas.

NANS noted that Ogun State has recorded other security incidents affecting tertiary students in recent months, including a hostel robbery in June that claimed the life of a final-year Olabisi Onabanjo University student.

The association extended its condolences to the family, friends and the entire D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic community. It also prayed for the recovery of the injured students.

NANS urged students to remain united, peaceful and vigilant while demanding justice, security and accountability.
