HULL, United Kingdom — Hull City stunned Manchester United 2-0 at the MKM Stadium on Saturday as the promoted side marked their return to the Premier League with a memorable opening-day victory.

Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy scored first-half goals for Hull, handing Michael Carrick's Manchester United their first defeat of the 2026/27 league campaign.

Ajayi opened the scoring in the 17th minute after goalkeeper Senne Lammens failed to fully deal with Oli McBurnie's effort following a corner. The defender reacted quickly to the loose ball and converted from close range.

Hull doubled their advantage in the 38th minute when Regan Slater delivered a free-kick into the Manchester United penalty area and Mendy rose to head the ball beyond Lammens. It was Mendy's first Premier League goal following his summer move to Hull.

The result completed an impressive return to the top flight for Hull, who had been outside the Premier League for nine years.

It was also Hull's first top-flight victory over Manchester United and their first league win against the Old Trafford club since 1974.

Manchester United dominated possession after falling behind but struggled to turn their control of the ball into clear scoring opportunities.

Carrick's side finished with 72 per cent possession, according to Reuters, but Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis was rarely seriously troubled. Bryan Mbeumo produced one of United's better attempts during the second half.

Marcus Rashford was introduced from the bench, making his first Manchester United appearance since December 2024 following loan spells away from Old Trafford, but the forward could not inspire a comeback.

The defeat is an early setback for Carrick after United ended last season strongly and finished third in the Premier League.

Carrick acknowledged after the game that improvements were needed but said one defeat would not alter the direction of the team as United turn their attention to their next fixture.

Hull will next travel to Coventry City on Saturday, August 29, while Manchester United host Ipswich Town at Old Trafford on Sunday, August 30.
