The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D, has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Osun Internal Revenue Service (OIRS), demanding explanations and corrective action over alleged duplicate and recurring tax-clearance charges imposed on students in the state.
In a joint press statement dated October 20, 2026, the Zonal Coordinator, Comrade Adeyemo Josiah Kayode, popularly known as BILLIONCODES, and the Assistant General Secretary, Comrade Abubakar Musefiu D, known as GOLDEN SON, said the association had reviewed a petition and reports submitted by NANS JCC Osun and engaged students affected by the disputed charges.
According to the student leaders, complaints include demands for payments ranging from ₦8,000 to ₦10,000, delays in verifying existing parental tax records and fresh payment requests in subsequent academic sessions.
They alleged that some students had experienced difficulties completing registration while their records remained unverified, but were able to proceed after making another payment. NANS said the reported situation required urgent clarification from the revenue service.
The association called on OIRS Acting Chairman, Alhaji Solanke Hamzat, to explain the legal basis for the charges, approved rates, persons liable to pay and procedures for verifying previous compliance. It also demanded clarification on how the service distinguishes legitimate new assessments from possible duplicate collections.
NANS Southwest Zone D said affected students should suspend payment of the specific tax-clearance charges challenged in the petition pending clarification and resolution. It stressed that the directive does not cover tuition or other undisputed school fees.
The association also called on OIRS and affected institutions to suspend enforcement against students with genuine verification complaints and ensure that pending tax-record checks do not prevent them from accessing registration or examinations.
Students were advised to preserve payment receipts, portal screenshots and payment demands and submit relevant evidence through their Students’ Union leadership to NANS JCC Osun.
The student leaders warned that any alleged intimidation or academic victimisation of complainants would be challenged. They also said individuals found to have knowingly facilitated duplicate or unauthorised payments could be named in petitions to the appropriate authorities.
The association gave OIRS until Tuesday, October 27, 2026, to provide a substantive written response to the petition reportedly submitted by NANS JCC Osun on October 8 and begin a documented resolution process.
Its demands include disclosure of the legal basis, approved rates, revenue codes and assessment procedures; a breakdown of collections by institution and academic session; improved parental tax-record verification; reconciliation and refund of payments established to be duplicate, excessive or unauthorised; and written protection against academic penalties or retaliation.
NANS said failure to take meaningful action within the seven-day period would lead to coordinated peaceful picketing and protests at OIRS and other relevant locations. It stated that any demonstration would remain peaceful and orderly, with emergency access maintained.
The association also appealed to Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, the State House of Assembly and other oversight bodies to intervene.
While affirming its support for lawful taxation, NANS said students should not face repeated charges because of administrative delays. The allegations and demands are those of the student association; OIRS’s response was not included in the statement provided for this report.
