KWARA, Nigeria — The Kwara State Police Command has apprehended Sanda Aliyu, a suspected member of a kidnapping syndicate, in connection with an alleged plot to acquire an AK-47 rifle for N1.6 million in Kaiama Local Government Area.

Aliyu was taken into custody on August 3, 2026, by operatives from the Anti-Kidnapping Section. The arrest followed credible intelligence indicating he was negotiating with an individual identified as Aliyu Mohammed, who is currently at large, for the firearm's procurement.

Police detectives initiated an operation based on the tip-off and successfully arrested Aliyu before the weapon could be delivered. The suspect reportedly confessed to his involvement in the attempted arms deal during interrogation.

According to a statement released on Thursday by the state Police Public Relations Officer, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, Aliyu admitted that N1.6 million had already been paid towards the purchase of the rifle. He further disclosed his intention to use the firearm to elevate his status within his existing kidnapping gang, with the ultimate goal of forming his own criminal organization.

Ejire-Adeyemi stated that investigators are conducting further verification to identify other individuals involved in the transaction and to ascertain the full scope of the criminal network. The ongoing investigation aims to uncover more details about the attempted acquisition, identify all connected parties, and understand the broader criminal activities of the gang.

This arrest occurs amidst intensified security operations across Kwara State, prompted by a recent surge in kidnappings and other violent crimes in several communities. The police command has assured residents of its commitment to sustained intelligence-led operations against criminal elements.

The Commissioner of Police in Kwara State, Ojo Adekimi, affirmed that the command would continue to deploy its resources to protect citizens. He emphasized that operations would persist until communities are secured and residents can conduct their daily activities without fear.

Aliyu remains in police custody as the investigation progresses. Authorities are actively working to apprehend Mohammed and identify any other individuals allegedly linked to the attempted arms purchase.
