PORT HARCOURT, Nigeria — A 100-level student at Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Rumuolumeni, Rivers State, was shot on campus on Wednesday by suspected cultists. The incident occurred just two days after a violent clash between rival cult groups. The university management has since suspended the ongoing Students' Union Government Week.

The latest shooting incident happened 48 hours after suspected members of the Vikings and Klu Klux Klan cult groups engaged in a supremacy battle, creating tension on the campus. Details of Wednesday's shooting remained scarce as of Wednesday evening.

A source close to the injured student, who spoke anonymously due to the sensitive nature of the matter, stated that the victim was rushed to a hospital. Efforts were underway to perform surgery to remove bullet fragments from his body. The source also mentioned that friends of the victim were raising funds for the surgery.

It could not be independently verified if the injured student was affiliated with any cult group. A video circulating online showed the student lying on a hospital bed, being assisted by coursemates into the institution.

Blessing Agabe, the Public Relations Officer of the Rivers State Police Command, confirmed on Monday that the earlier clash involved two suspected cult groups and that the command was investigating. When contacted regarding Wednesday's shooting, Agabe, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, stated she had seen the viral video. She promised to obtain further details from the Divisional Police Officer in the area and provide an update, but had not done so by Wednesday evening.

In response to the escalating violence, the university management announced the suspension of all remaining activities for the Students’ Union Government Week. A statement issued in Port Harcourt by the Registrar, Dr. Chinonye Ajie, directed students to return to their classrooms on Thursday, August 13, 2026, for normal academic activities.

The statement warned that any student failing to attend lectures would be held responsible for their actions. Management also advised students to refrain from any behavior that could jeopardize their academic pursuits or threaten the peace and security of the university.

“This is to inform the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education community that all remaining activities for the Students’ Union Government (SUG) Week have been suspended by the University Management with immediate effect,” the statement read. “Students are therefore advised to return to classes on Thursday, August 13, 2026, for normal academic activities. Any student who fails to attend lectures will be held responsible for their actions. Students are also strongly warned to desist from any action that is inimical to their academic pursuits and the peace of the University.”
