NIGERIA — The G-100, a group advocating for opposition unity, has postponed its proposed summit for opposition political parties from August 18 to August 31, 2026. The decision aims to allow participating parties more time for consultations following the National Peace Summit.

The G-100 is urging prominent opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Anambra State governor Peter Obi, to unite and present a single presidential candidate. The group believes a fragmented opposition lacks the strength to challenge President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress in the upcoming 2027 election.

In a statement released on Friday, the G-100, through former APC chieftain Salihu Lukman, explained that the rescheduling followed discussions with six opposition parties and members of the House of Representatives minority caucus. They agreed that holding the summit after the August 18 National Peace Summit would be more productive.

The extended period will also be used to refine proposals and frameworks for the August 31 meeting. The G-100 reported that consultations with party leadership, stakeholders, and House minority caucus members have been candid, substantive, and encouraging.

“There is a clear recognition across the different parties that this is an important moment for Nigeria’s democracy and that the opposition must begin to engage one another with greater purpose and structure,” the statement read. It acknowledged that differences exist among the parties but stressed these have not hindered discussions on cooperation.

The group expressed confidence that the August 31 summit could yield significant outcomes due to the quality of the ongoing conversations. The rescheduling occurs as opposition parties face mounting pressure to define their political direction before the 2027 general elections.

The summit is intended to be a platform for parties to explore collaboration and develop a more structured approach to opposition politics. The G-100 plans to use the additional time to deepen discussions with participating parties and other stakeholders.

Further details regarding the summit's program and venue will be announced later.
