ABUJA, Nigeria — Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has cautioned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) against any actions that could compromise the integrity of Saturday's governorship election in Osun State. Abubakar issued this warning on Wednesday in Abuja during the ongoing National Youth Leadership Summit of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Describing the Osun election as a crucial test for the nation's electoral system ahead of the 2027 general elections, Abubakar stressed the importance of a transparent and credible process. He explicitly stated, “And to INEC, I say this clearly: Osun is a test. There must be no mysterious glitches. No unexplained delays. No manipulation of the process.”

The former Vice President further detailed his expectations for the electoral body, emphasizing that “Election materials must arrive promptly. Accredited voters must be allowed to vote freely. Votes must be counted honestly, and results must be transmitted transparently and in accordance with the law.”

Abubakar also directed a caution to President Bola Tinubu and his administration, urging them to “resist any attempt to use government institutions” for partisan advantage. He called upon security agencies to focus on protecting voters rather than intimidating them, highlighting that their primary role is to secure the electoral process and foster a safe environment around polling units, not to create fear.
