LAGOS, Nigeria — Cultural entertainer and talking drummer Abike Ilu has built her brand around a distinctive drum-inspired hairstyle that reflects her commitment to Yoruba heritage.

“The drum-inspired hairstyle is more than a fashion statement; it is my identity and a symbol of my passion for Yoruba culture,” Abike Ilu said. “As a talking drummer, I wanted something that immediately tells people who I am and what I represent before I even perform.”

She noted that maintaining the hairstyle requires time and resources but views it as an investment in her brand. The look has made her easily recognisable and sparked conversations about her work.

Abike Ilu presents herself as a cultural entertainer whose mission is to preserve and promote Yoruba heritage through music and performance. Her style combines traditional talking drum rhythms with contemporary sounds and modern stage presentation.

She advised artists to be careful about professional partnerships, ensure agreements are documented, and educate themselves on contracts, copyright and legal rights. On issues of exploitation and harassment, she encouraged people to speak up and protect their dignity.
