ABUJA, Nigeria — Primary and secondary schools across Nigeria face new academic guidelines as the Federal Government approves a downward review of textbook assessment and ranking fees for publishers.

Under the updated policy announced by the Ministry of Education, only textbooks that pass official assessment and ranking by the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) will be authorized for classroom use starting in September 2026.

The directive strictly prohibits schools from adopting unranked or unvetted instructional materials.

By lowering evaluation fees, the government aims to encourage local authors and educational publishers to submit their books for standardization, ensuring that learning materials align with national curriculum objectives and affordability standards for parents.
